WNC Fly Fishing Trail

Known as the NC Trout Capital, Jackson County is proud to be home to the WNC Fly Fishing Trail, which features 15 prime spots to cast a line in the Western NC Mountains. Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout abound along the trail’s more than 4,600 miles of streams and 1,100 miles of hatchery-supported waters. You can even go for the “Tuck Grand Slam” by catching all three types of trout in the sparkling waters of the Tuckasegee River.

Here are some insider tips before wading in:

  • Time of Year: Best fishing season is fall through spring.

  • Free Maps: Head on over to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce for a free water-resistant map of the Fly Fishing Trail.

  • Extra Challenge: More adventurous anglers can try Caney Fork, Mull Creek, or Moses Creek.

  • Peak Scenery: One of the most scenic points on the trail, Caney Fork is a must-visit during the fall.

  • Guides & Gear: Professional guides are available as well as rental gear for the more casual fisherman or woman.

  • Keep It Legal: Make sure you purchase a fishing license ($7 for residents, $18 for non-residents) before casting a line!
